“Arm and Hand”

This arm and hand were created in my studio in Seattle. I created them in Seattle where I have easy access to many varieties of clay. I chose the clay that was low fire and dense. I wanted a high level of realism and this clay was best for that too. It had to be low fire because my intention was to literally attach it to a large figure I was creating in my studio in Chiang Mai which is created with a low fire clay.
As crazy as this idea was, it worked. I was able to attach the piece to the sculpture in Thailand and make small adjustments on both the arm and torso of the figure to have it work anatomically and artistically. I did need to cut it off before firing to be sure it didn’t fall off in the kiln and shatter.
After the firing I reattached the arm with rebar and fast setting concrete.
Eventually I am going to have a mold made of this piece and cast it. At that time this arm and hand will be its own piece at it appears here in this photo.
